Bare Feet and a Clear Mind

Until not long ago, the prevailing belief was that the brain cannot renew itself. The neurons we were born with,
so it was thought, had to last us a lifetime. Today we know that our brain is one of the many tissues in the body that can renew themselves in an amazing way.
My dear ones,
Our brain can produce new cells!
It appears that most of our brain cells are produced in the hippocampus, and about 700 to 1,500 new neurons are formed every day.
Until not long ago, the prevailing belief was that the brain cannot renew itself. The neurons we were born with, so it was thought, had to last us a lifetime. Today we know that our brain is one of the many tissues in the body that can renew themselves in an amazing way.
Neurogenesis is the process by which our brain can keep building new brain cells, or neurons.
Our brain contains about 100 billion brain cells and constantly produces new ones at a rapid pace. But this ability declines with age unless we adopt a lifestyle that supports the brain and take natural substances that help protect its cells.
The rate of neurogenesis declines as we get older. By adopting practices known to support neurogenesis, we can ensure that our brain builds as many new neurons as possible and continues to function exceptionally well throughout our lives.
Five gifts from nature help keep our minds sharp and clear, and take almost no effort to access: pure water, sleep that is plentiful and uninterrupted, contact with the earth (grounding), gravity and unfiltered sunlight every day. Our brain is more than 90 percent water, so it is best to drink water that is as pure as possible. Distilled water is the cleanest; learn more about the importance of water here . It is best to go to bed as early as possible, without interference from screens or artificial light; walk barefoot on soil and grass whenever possible; spend time near trees; use gravity to our advantage by raising our legs above our heads for a few minutes each day; and spend time in the sun without creams or glasses when its radiation is not at its peak.
It's important to remember that in our era the level of environmental toxicity is quite high, in fact higher than ever in known history. The brain tends to accumulate heavy metals and nanoplastic particles, so it would be wise to cleanse the body of these toxic compounds from time to time. The brain is an organ that is very sensitive to synthetic electromagnetic radiation, so it's worth minimizing its damage as much as possible. You can learn more about cleansing in the Health Line Detox episode, the Health Line episode on radiation protection and the Conscious Nutrition course, all available on my courses page.
Natural compounds and plants that help protect the brain and build new brain cells:
Curcumin
Curcumin, an active compound in the spice turmeric, improves the rate of cell renewal even after traumatic brain injury, improves memory and concentration, is anti-inflammatory, and also protects against neurotoxins such as bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting chemical known to harm the process of neurogenesis, especially in the fetus in the womb.
Astaxanthin
A carotenoid (a natural pigment found mainly in fruits and vegetables) and a powerful antioxidant, it is known to protect the nerves in the brain and the peripheral nervous system. It also improves the rate of cell renewal.
Astaxanthin, a red-orange carotenoid and strong antioxidant, boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein our body produces that supports the nervous system and plays a role in neural development, growth and function.
Melatonin
The hormone melatonin is an antidepressant and boosts neurogenesis. It increases cell proliferation in the hippocampus and slows the typical decline in neurogenesis that occurs with age. In many cases it improves sleep quality and so helps the brain recover.

Bacopa
A well-known plant, widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Beneficial for a number of brain disorders such as Alzheimer's, epilepsy, stroke and depression. It protects the nervous system and encourages neurogenesis along with neural plasticity. It improves neurogenesis and especially brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Mango tree leaves
An infusion of mango tree leaves improves neurogenesis and especially brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Ginkgo biloba
Improves the survival of neural stem cells. Contains compounds that promote BDNF and help regulate the growth and survival of brain cells. Increases neurogenesis in the hippocampus.
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)
Known for its antioxidant properties, it is commonly used to treat neurological disorders. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and positively affects multiple cellular processes. It also has neuroprotective and neuro-restorative effects, especially if given right after an ischemic injury. Alpha-lipoic acid increases neurogenesis and also promotes functional recovery after stroke.
Astragalus
An adaptogenic plant that has been used in the Far East for thousands of years. Traditional Chinese astragalus contains the active compound astragaloside IV (AS-IV), which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and protects against stroke. This plant improves neurogenesis and increases the rate of neurological functional recovery, even after stroke.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
This famous traditional plant contains ginsenosides with neuroprotective properties (they protect the nervous system). In addition to being antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, ginsenosides promote neurogenesis.
Resveratrol
Found in grapes, cocoa, wine and berries, it accelerates neurogenesis. Resveratrol reduces cognitive damage caused by exposure to heavy metals. It improves the lifespan and function of the cells' mitochondria.
Gotu kola
Also known as Indian pennywort. Promotes wound healing and inhibits oxidative damage. Reduces nerve damage caused by chemotherapy. Contains asiatic acid, which improves learning, memory and neurogenesis in the hippocampus of the brain.
To days full of renewal: days of bare feet,
greenery all around, bright sunshine and a clear mind.
