Deeply Influencing the Whole World

Our simplest thought or action,

the decisions we make every day and how we see and treat the world,

can be deeply meaningful and profoundly affect the lives of those around us,

as well as the entire world.

My dear ones,

There are times when we may feel disconnected from the world.

Sometimes a feeling comes up that no one sees us, or that whatever we decide won't change a thing.

Sometimes it's simply a feeling of loneliness.

It can seem as though our actions carry no great meaning, and we may feel as if we are suspended in a kind of void, empty of all content. And yet, the truth is that our simplest thought or action, the decisions we make every day and how we see and treat the world, can be deeply meaningful and profoundly affect the lives of those around us, as well as the entire world.

This planet and everything on it and within it, people, animals, plants, air, water, soil, are deeply bound together by ties that are invisible to the eye but felt by the soul. Seemingly meaningless actions on our part, whether positive or negative, can affect people and the environment even when they appear separate from us.

Recognizing the connection between all things can help us think about our choices and our lives in terms of a very wide influence, far beyond what we perceive right now.

Think of the wooden table in your home, where we set down our food and around which our families gather. A whole way of life revolves around that table, and sometimes it is even the heart of the home. The material the table is made of was once part of a tree, which was part of a grove or a forest. Someone was paid to cut down the tree and prepare it, and another person built the table. Losing the tree may have harmed the forest or the animals that made that tree their home, but this table has enriched our lives, and around it we have grown a family tree for generations that was never cut down in any forest.

An encouraging word to a young child about their special talent can move them to develop it, so that one day their inventions may change the lives of millions. A poem a poet writes to express a moment of loneliness can, a hundred years later, make a stranger reading it on another continent feel connected, know that someone understood what they feel, and feel less alone.

Being aware of our connection to all things can help us think about our choices in terms of their impact.

See how powerful we are: what we think and do can echo in the lives of people we may never meet. Recognizing that we are intimately connected to all things, and understanding our power to influence our world, can be a giant step toward a more conscious, nourishing life with far more possibilities.

Thoughts are not private, decisions have meaning, and actions have long-term, far-reaching impact.

Instead of running from our greatness, let us take divine responsibility for the vital place we hold in this existence.
